Hey That’s My Cape! AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Trailer Analyzed

Most of you probably already know I’m a bigger DC Comics fan than Marvel Comics fan but that doesn’t mean I don’t love certain characters from their universe or aren’t excited to see them brought to life on the big screen. But there is one character and one movie in particular that never got me very excited. I’m talking about Spider-Man and his newest film appearance in Amazing Spider-Man.

I gave my thoughts on the first trailer for Amazing Spider-Man in the latest Hey, That’s My Cape at Newsarama.

"At least THIS Spider-Man has a few wisecracks up his sleeve. That aside, the movie looks too much like a remake."

I'm gonna give you that one. or at least, for that scene in the backseat. Let's see what he does for the rest of the movie…

"I'm sorry I "lost credibility" in your world by suggesting a storyline to someone who is complaining about stories from a few years ago."

Oh trust me, I ain't just hatin' on Shed, Spider-Island was kinda lame, too. But be honest… can you really blame me?

As for the lack of MJ in the book not eventually affecting sales, I can't say you're wrong, but then again, you can't say I'm wrong either. But it would be pretty interesting to find out, wouldn't it?

Yeah, every movie is basically a cash grab. But you know the difference between the two? Rebooting and casting with a lower budget to maximize profits, while announcing ahead of time the intention of a sequel to keep the rights to the character from reverting back to Marvel/Disney.

So yeah, I think his one's a BIGGER cash grab. Here's hoping that it'll at least be a good one.

I suggested "Spider Island" as a jumping on point instead of going back through 2 year's worth of comics to see what's new with Spider-Man (I dropped off with OMD/BND also). That being said, I didn't read "Shed", but the things I heard about it sounded dumb. I'm sorry I "lost credibility" in your world by suggesting a storyline to someone who is complaining about stories from a few years ago.

People aren't going to stop buying the book because MJ just isn't in it. If they dump all over the character in the disrespectful way they did in OMD, then yes, they'll lose readers, but they also made Peter look like a moron in those 4 issues as well.

This new movie DOES have a wisecracking Spider-Man. It also helps that it looks like a guy in a costume (as opposed to the previous ones that looked like blatant CG). Every movie since the first one could be called a cash grab if you want to be honest about it. They're a movie company. That's why they make movies.

You just recommended 'Spider-Island." Do you know how much credibility you just lost? I suppose you also thought highly of "Shed…"

This new movie is just a cash grab for Sony. I'm actually stunned they sprung for 3D effects.

Know why that is? I'll give you a hint. Take her out of the book, the see what happens to sales.

Fans of the character are clinging to the hope that Marvel will restore their relationship/marriage. And unfortunately, nothing short of seriously low sales or a complete change of EICs will make that happen. In the meantime, she'll be used as yet another mouthpiece for the "We love Carlie Cooper" camp.

You'll see Peter and Carlie together again before they'll restore the marriage.

Ever since Dan Slott took over sole writing duties, MJ has been around in almost every issue. If Marvel is anti-MJ, Slott sure isn't. You should definitely check out the Spider-Island issues. There's a nice 'oops I didn't mean to say that/I hope you didn't hear what I blurted out' moment you'll be happy to see. Peter is actually single right now, too.

Plus wasn't Gwen killed, then brought back in the Ultimate timeline?

Personally I think this movie looks great so far. Marvel nor Disney have anything to do with the film. It doesn't bother me that they're rebooting the film with different characters. From the trailer, there is so much to indicate they really nailed down the characters of Spider-Man AND Peter Parker. With an actress like Emma Stone playing the love interest, it really doesn't make a different if she's Gwen or MJ – she'll knock her role out of the park.

The Raimi trilogy is actually a blending of the Ultimate Universe and the 616 Universe versions.

You know what MY problem with the film? Right now at Marvel, there seems to be "anti-MJ" bias perpetuated by Joe Quesada ever since One More Day. Add to that how Spider-Man seems to sleep around as well as being forced into a relationship with the former EIC's daughter, Carlie Cooper. And remember, none of this would have happened if quesada hadn't did OMD and did away with the marriage of Peter and MJ solely for the purpose of having him doing all that stuff mentioned above.

And of course we now come to the reboot, where Mary Jane has apparently been removed completely, replaced with Gwen Stacey. And here's the rub. Before Spider-man was KILLED in Ultimate Spider-man to generate media buzz and to boost sales, Gwen played an even bigger role in his life before she was killed, so wouldn't it have made more sense to call this movie Ultimate Spider-man?
