Many thought it would never happen but the New Gods are smiling on us today. Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl and Grant Gustin’s The Flash will appear together as their characters on CBS.

Variety has the details:

Grant Gustin, star of The CW’s hit superhero series “The Flash,” will visit CBS’ “Supergirl” for a crossover episode set to air Monday, March 28 at 8 p.m. on CBS, it was announced Wednesday.

Plot details for the episode — including what will bring Barry Allen (Gustin) to National City to meet titular heroine Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) — are set to be announced at a later date.

The Flash and Supergirl executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg gave a joint statement on the super news. “We are so incredibly excited to announce something that we have dreamed of happening since we started making ‘Supergirl’ – The Flash and Supergirl are teaming up! We want to thank Grant Gustin for making the time to come visit (on top of his already immense workload) and all of the folks at CBS, The CW, Warner Bros. and DC for working this out. And finally thanks to the fans and journalists who have kept asking for this to happen. It is our pleasure and hope to create an episode worthy of everyone’s enthusiasm and support.”

Previously Berlanti told Variety, “[CBS] has said publicly at this point they’re going to keep her to themselves. I always approach the shows as a fan first, so I would love to see [a crossover]. I think in success, all things are possible. But there’s a lot that would have to happen before everybody might say yes to that.”

No word on what sealed the deal (besides hard work by all involved) but I’m dancing around like a fool right now.

The DC TV universes were previously held apart by networks but after Constantine was canceled by NBC, they were able to pull the character (and actor Matt Ryan) into The CW’s Arrow. It was amazing! Considering The CW already has their own universe going with Arrow, The Flash, and now Legends of Tomorrow, it seemed unlikely a currently running series on another network would let them into the clubhouse. I must say I’m pleasantly surprised by this.

The CW’s previous DC TV generation, Smallville, gave us a Supergirl in Laura Vandervoort who is now set to play another DC character on CBS’s Supergirl. Recently there had been talk of Smallville’s Superman, Tom Welling, making an appearance as the classic character but as of this year no one has asked him to do it.

I’m hoping they team up to fight the team up of Killer Frost and Livewire.

  2. Rick Bman says:

So… does that mean Supergirl takes place in the same universe as Flash and Arrow or will this have The Flash visiting another alternate Earth?

    • I’m very interested to see where they go with it. There are tons of ways they could go about it. Considering recent storylines on the Flash I’m leaning toward Supergirl being on another Earth though.

  3. They Call Me The Fizz says:

    C’mon, they’ve gotta have a race for charity…

  4. Fritobandito says:

I hope this leads to an episode of The Flash where Dean Cain, Tom Welling,
Gerard Christopher,Brandon Routh pulling double duty, and John Newton show up as Supermans.

  5. Pete Pfau says:

I confess to being very entertained while considering the in-universe logistics of this, given the established details of both shows.
