Gina Rodriguez, Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson: Annihalation

Ex Machina director Alex Garland is setting up Gina Rodriguez, Natalie Portman, and Tessa Thompson for an adaptation of a sci-fi/horror film filled with smart women.

Annihilation is a film based on Jeff VanderMeer 2014 novel. It’s part of the Southern Reach Trilogy which features a team of composed of a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, and a surveyor who are the 12th expedition sent into Area X. The characters aren’t given names, the story is told through the biologist’s journal. I only read part way through the description but it sounds super eerie and interesting.

The Wrap reports:

Hot off the success of “Creed,” rising star Tessa Thompson is being eyed to join Oscar winner Natalie Portman and Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez in Alex Garland‘s “Annihilation,” multiple individuals familiar with the Paramount project have told TheWrap. Paramount had no comment, while representatives for Thompson couldn’t confirm at this time.

I’ve loved Portman’s work for years and while I’ve yet to watch Jane the Virgin, I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about Rodriguez. I think it would be really interesting to see her in this film. I also haven’t seen Creed yet but adore Thompson’s work from Veronica Mars and Dear White People.

Garland, who also worked on 28 Days Later and Dredd, is getting lots of attention right now thanks to his work on the superb Ex Machina.
