It may not be exactly what #SaveConstantine was after but it’s still good news. NBC’s Constantine, actor Matt Ryan, will get to continue portraying the Hellblazer on Season 4 of The CW’s Arrow!

Constantine showrunner David Cerone tweeted a cryptic message: “Nice little surprise coming today for #Constantine fans. Stay on the lookout.”

The internet quickly surmised it might have to do with the upcoming Arrow portion of the Television Critics Association summer press presentations which could have resulted in Ryan making his way to Starling City. My mind quickly started fanfic of John Constantine and Oliver Queen (which resulted in the top pic here as well as a few other bad photoshops but thankfully we didn’t have to wait long for an answer. The Hollywood Reporter revealed Ryan was indeed going to be guest starring on Arrow. Ryan left this video message for fans on twitter:

THR also says he’s set to appear in the fifth episode, called “Haunted,” which sounds like appropriate territory for Constantine. They also report:

“We are thrilled to have Matt Ryan reprise the role of John Constantine on an upcoming episode of Arrow. Matt is an incredibly talented actor and his portrayal of this beloved character was always something we admired,” said Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim in a statement. “The introduction of magic and mysticism on the show this season has provided a truly organic opportunity for us to bring John Constantine to Arrow and the CW’s DC universe. It will be a well-deserved tip of the hat to all the Constantine fans who were so incredibly supportive of that series.”

TVLine got a few more details. Guggenheim told them it was always the plan to start working in mystical elements in Season 4.

He said, (spoilers for Season 3) “Unlike Thea, who wasn’t fully dead, the consequences of using the pit on someone as dead as Sara was creates some unforeseen difficulties…and John Constantine is uniquely suited to help our team deal with those.”

But, unless the episode is a huge ratings hit, this may be the only time we see Constantine on Arrow if what Guggenheim said here is any indication [Emphasis mine.]:

“This is something the fans were clamoring for,” agrees Guggenheim, praising DC for being so “magnanimous and generous in giving us this one-time dispensation.” In addition, since two share a studio (Warner Bros.), Arrow has been able to secure not just the original actor, but his original outfits, as well. “The trench coat, the tie, the shirt…the whole wardrobe is being taken out for storage and shipped up to Vancouver.”

Either way, I’m just happy this is happening. While I felt Constantine could have used some improvement, I don’t feel it got a fair shake at NBC and would have loved to see where they went in a Season 2.

We know Arrow star Stephen Amell is excited:

… are you?
