Princess Leia, Rey, & More Lead Star Wars Computer Tutorial For “Hour of Code”
Code.org, along with Disney and Lucasfilm have announced a Star Wars-themed computer science tutorial to get kids engaged and support Hour of Code!
Disney’s blog, Oh My Disney, reports:
Students will learn to write code that allows them to create games using Star Wars characters. They can join forces with Rey to guide BB-8 through a space mission, then team up with Princess Leia to build their own game featuring R2-D2 or C-3PO. Students will also be able to play their completed games on smartphones and share them with friends and family through a unique link. How cool is that? Answer: Really, really cool.
And yes, their landing page features two of the women of the Star Wars universe.
From the Code.org about us page:
Launched in 2013, Code.org® is a non-profit dedicated to expanding access to computer science, and increasing participation by women and underrepresented students of color. Our vision is that every student in every school should have the opportunity to learn computer science. We believe computer science should be part of core curriculum, alongside other courses such as biology, chemistry or algebra.
Here’s another video from Code.org specifically on the importance of girls getting into STEM.

Star Wars is definitely a great jumping off point for getting anyone interested in learning so I think this is a pretty cool project.
