Star Trek Beyond Actor Reveals One of the Enterprise Crew Has a Child

I wouldn’t consider this a spoiler since Star Trek Beyond let Entertainment Tonight on set to document it but an actor revealed one of the Enterprise crew has a child. Proceed at your own risk as details are to come.

You may recall I wasn’t thrilled with the first trailer for Justin Lin’s Star Trek Beyond. I wasn’t alone either. Lin eventually addressed the fan reaction saying:

There were other versions that were much more traditional and I can see where maybe the hardcore fans could probably see that as, “Oh.” But with trailers you’re putting a two-hour movie into a minute and a half, and the one thing I wanted to make sure is that it hopefully represents that we are trying to be bold and take risks, whether we are successful or not, I don’t know.”

Co-writer and star of the film, Simon Pegg, also said “I didn’t love it because I know there’s a lot more to the film.” But considering I’m a longtime Trekker I’m still following news of the film.

“This is a secret that everybody may not know about,” says ET host Kevin Frazier before looping around to one of the consoles and revealing a very interesting photo.

“Sulu has a baby,” explains actor John Cho. “At the beginning of the movie we’re all sort of…homesick and we’re getting into our ruts and I think we’ve been around each other too long. And that’s sort of where it starts. And Sulu has a heartache for his little baby and has brought his picture to his console.”

He went on to say, “There is another revelation that you’ll find out in regards to this baby but you’ll have to wait to see the movie.”

Does this mean we’re getting Demora Sulu in the new continuity?

Actor Jacqueline Kim played Damora, daughter of George Takei’s Hikaru Sulu, in the film Star Trek: Generations. It was a lovely surprise to fans but also meant a great deal to young Asian women who had been fans of Star Trek. Representation matters, after all.

Damora was an ensign on the Excelsior-class USS Enterprise-B and while she didn’t have a role in main Trek continuity going forward she did play a part in novels including [Editor’s Note: affiliate link] Peter David’s (non-canon) The Captain’s Daughter.

Of course we could get more films with the current cast but if the actors were ready to move on it would be easy to fast forward and put Sulu’s daughter in the captain’s chair. Just putting that out there.
