The Purge: Election Year Is Bound to Give People Bad Ideas

Considering I didn’t love the first Purge and never bothered to see the sequel, I wouldn’t have posted this trailer for third installment except that it is all too real in our current climate.

You might have heard, the political landscape in the United States right now is…not good. The Purge: Election is extra horrific considering the elections coming up but especially because of the horrible shootings that keep happening in our country. While the new commercial (above) is benign in nature and is a parody of actual election commercials, the trailer (below) is truly tough to watch.

Etan Cohen, writer of the 2006 satire Idiocracy, has recently gone on Twitter to say, “I never expected #idiocracy to become a documentary” about the politics circus right now. I’d love to say The Purge: Election creators are trying to make an actual, important point in the film but I highly doubt it.

Warning: this one contains some disturbing images.

I’m honestly surprised by how short sighted the Purge movies are. “All crime is legal,” and all people do is kill and assault each other? Smart Purgers would embezzle, smuggle, sell massive quantities of illegal substances, insider trading, and maybe some political chicanery. It seems kinda silly that it ends up just being a bunch of masked weirdos going all Thrill Kill.

People already get away with doing that stuff, so why would The Purge make that special

The first trailer was a beauty. The second? Well I usually prefer less blood in my torture porn.
