Who watches the Watchmen?
WE will watch the Watchmen!
A settlement has been reached between Warner Bros. and Fox and the film will be released on March 6th as planned according to Variety. The studios had this to say in a joint statement:
“Warner Bros. and Twentieth Century Fox have resolved their dispute regarding the rights to the upcoming motion picture ‘Watchmen’ in a confidential settlement. Warner Bros. acknowledges that Fox acted in good faith in bringing its claims, which were asserted prior to the start of principal photography.
Fox acknowledges that Warner Brothers acted in good faith in defending against those claims. Warner Bros. and Fox, like all ‘Watchmen’ fans, look forward with great anticipation to this film’s March 6 release in theatres.”
Confidential is all relevant though as Variety claims Fox with receive a gross sum equaling between 5% and 8.5% depending on how much the film brings in worldwide. In addition, they will be a “gross player” in any sequels (wouldn’t that be something?) or spinoffs. Fox’s name will not be on the film nor will it co-own the property.
Just think, 300 pulled in around $450 mil… so if Watchmen does near as well as that (which it should), Fox will get 8.5% of that gross. Which is somewhere around $65-70 million. For not making the movie. Absolutely insane.
Here’s hoping it’s as good as it can be.
Yeah, well…what can you do? But at least it isn’t as though she won’t see ANY comic related movies with me. She loved the first two Spider-Man movies, Iron Man, Batman Begins and Dark Knight. She also loved Sin City. For that one, I practically had to drag her there, but she loved it.
Maybe I’ll try again as March inches closer…
Awww! Sorry to hear that Randy. I can’t believe she didn’t go for the Denny thing, I think he looks totally hot as the Comedian.
I’m still reserving judgement on this movie until I actually see it opening weekend. And I WILL see it opening weekend.
The thing I like about Watchmen, the graphic novel is that it makes the best use of its medium. It was created to be a comic book.
If they can capture at least a fraction of that on film, then it will be all worth it. I just don’t want to walk out of the movie and feel that Fox should have won.
On a related note, Jill, if you and your boyfriend want to hop a plane to Chicago opening weekend to see it, I’d love to have company. My wife informed me that I can see this movie by myself.
I can’t even get her to see it by telling her one of her ‘boyfriends’ is in it. The Comedian is played by the guy who played Denny Duquette on Grey’s Anatomy. The dead guy that’s been appearing the last month or so. I even told her that maybe she’d get lucky and there would be scenes of him with his shirt off.
No deal.
It’s about time.
