Cate Blanchett Watched Beauty Vloggers For Thor: Ragnarok Makeup Research

We recently got our first look at Cate Blanchett’s villainous Hela from Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok. Turns out, she took some inspiration from fans online to help shape the look with the team.

Blanchett is a chameleon as it is (have you seen the Manifesto trailer?) so I was excited to see what she’d look like as Hela in Ragnarok (we got our first official look at a few of the characters the other day). It was good, if not a little underwhelming considering what the character has looked like in the past. In Marvel Comics Hela is the Asgardian goddess of death and based on the Norse goddess, Hel, daughter of Loki.

I still have hope we’ll get that giant headdress, if only for a short bit, considering this early concept art Marvel released.

Yahoo spoke to her briefly about the character’s look:

“When I was starting to think about how she might look, I went back to the fanbase,” said Blanchett, who recently spoke to Yahoo. “All these girls were doing Hela makeup looks on YouTube. I thought about what their takes on her were. I spoke to Marvel about what she would look like when she would be unmasked, so she wasn’t a faceless, generic baddie. They were very open to everything.”

Yahoo linked to a few videos but it’s unclear if those are the ones Blanchett actually watched. There’s actually several on there for Hel/Hela:

I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more pop up, as well as impressive cosplay of her overall look, as we get closer to Thor: Ragnarok’s release on November 3rd. I can’t wait to see her reaction.

That’s a good look for her! Sorta the anti-Galadriel.
