Chloë Grace Moretz Takes the Title Role in Live-Action The Little Mermaid

Kick-Ass’ Chloë Grace Moretz is heading into fairy tale territory to play Ariel in the live-action The Little Mermaid.

Variety reports the actor is “set to play the title character in Working Title and Universal’s The Little Mermaid retelling with Richard Curtis in talks to pen the script.”

There hasn’t been much news on this one since Sofia Coppola stepped down as director (which I was pretty bummed about). Variety also writes:

Moretz had been the frontrunner for the role even while Coppola was still attached; some insiders point to Coppola’s unwillingness to go with a star like Moretz as her impetus for parting ways with the project. Following Coppola’s exit, the studio still wanted Moretz for the role but did not want to make it official until a writer was attached to pen the final pass at the script.

Who knows if The Little Mermaid will follow suit with Disney’s recent Cinderella outing or try and separate themselves from the family-friendly pack and go the darker route but I’m down for either one.
