Classic Costume, Villain Revealed in Doctor Strange First Look

Entertainment Weekly was granted a first look at Marvel’s Doctor Strange and revealed Benedict Cumberbatch’s costume as well as the main villain for the film.

The Scott Derrickson directed film has only recently started production and while we’ve had glimpses from the set, they weren’t in the main costume. Surprisingly, Marvel has steared very traditional with this one.

Here’s what EW had to say:

EW’s First Look cover shoot with Cumberbatch was one of the very first times the British actor tried on the costume that his character, Doctor Stephen Strange, wears after transforming from a self-centered surgeon to a world-protecting sorcerer. The Sherlock star even used the shoot as something of a research-and-development session for the gesticulations which are part of his character’s spell-casting.

Cumberbatch told them creating the gestures was “beautiful” and “balletic” but also came with some difficulty. “It was like, okay, I’ve got to keep throwing these poses, these spells, these rune-casting things, everything he does physically. I’m thinking, there’s going to be a huge amount of speculation and intrigue over the positioning of that finger as opposed to it being there, or there,” he said. “And I’m still working on that. We haven’t played any of those scenes yet. I felt really self-conscious. But, then, by the end, it was great. It’s like anything, you just have to experiment.”

EW also got to reveal who would be playing the main villain in the film but if you’ve been following casting it wouldn’t be a difficult guess – Hannibal’s Mads Mikkelsen.

“Mads’ character is a sorcerer who breaks off into his own sect,” Kevin Feige told EW. “[He] believes that the Ancient One [Tilda Swinton] is just protecting her own power base and that the world may be better off if we were to allow some of these other things through.”

Though if you’re trying to guess which character Mikkelsen is actually playing, executive producer Stephen Broussard hopes they can keep it secret. “I’ve seen lots of names thrown around. No one has quite picked the name that we’ve chosen for him,” he said. (*cough*areyoulistening*cough*)

Meanwhile, Feige got to talking about what Marvel was getting up to in the 1960s to make Doctor Strange such a… shall we say, colorful creation? Speaking to EW:

“When this comic appeared in the early ’60s, it really informed, in a way that is pretty amazing, a lot of the psychedelic ’60s as we know it. I don’t know that they were doing anything weird in the bullpen in Marvel, but certainly the stuff they were doing inspired all those people who were doing mind-expansion experiments at the time,” explains producer Kevin Feige. “So, that’s inherent to the property. And that’s our mission statement for the visual effects on this movie.”

EW also revealed a few other concept art images. One of the Chamber of Relics and this other of Cumberbatch receiving some medical attention.

Doctor Strange also stars Rachel McAdams and Chiwetel Ejiofor and is set for release in November 2016.

[UPDATE] Yet another Entertainment Weekly post delved into McAdams’ role:

“Rachel McAdams plays a fellow surgeon that has a history with Strange and is his sort of lynchpin to his old life, once he steps into he role of a sorcerer,” says Kevin Feige, the producer of Doctor Strange and president of Marvel Studios. “She is someone he connects with at the beginning, and reconnects with, and helps anchor his humanity.”

“Rachel McAdams is sort of [Doctor Strange’s] contemporary in the modern-day New York world, before and after he goes on this crazy journey,” elaborates Doctor Strange executive producer Stephen Broussard. “So, she sees him before, she sees him after. She’s kind of this audience point of view.”

  2. HE LOOKS JUST LIKE DOCTOR STRANGE.

You kids won’t appreciate this, but back in our day, all of the superheroes had to dress like Neo from The Matrix or they wouldn’t get on laserdisc or VHS or rocks or whatever we had back then. In the dinosaur era.
