Hey, That’s My Cape! – Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Boys Club

The Expendables took the number one spot at the box office for a second time this past weekend. I guess that means people like to see a bunch of old dudes blowing crap up. I’ll be sure to tell my dad. Or maybe it was just a great movie. Either way, it’s only confirmed what we already knew – that male ensemble cast films make money (i.e. Oceans 11, etc). But is that what we want from our superhero teams?

Throughout the years, the name Joss Whedon has become synonymous with powerful female characters, so why on Earth did he confirm this past week that Black Widow would be the only female Avenger in the film he’s directing? Even though Whedon says the story will be pulling from various versions of the Avengers I think purists would agree leaving out key players, especially females, is odd.

Check out this week’s Hey, That’s My Cape! at Newsarama where I discuss why this bothers me and which ladies I think could have been included.

I really thought with Joss Whedon in on it we'd get at least one more superheroine. The Wasp seems like an obvious choice. Even if the audience doesn't know it needs another woman on the team, Joss should have known. I have to believe he didn't really have a choice.

I'll still see the movie, so maybe in terms of box office receipts the studio really doesn't need another woman. But I'll be a little bitter about it.

Yes, I want Wanda. I will stand up for Natasha though, in her era of membership she was a vital player in the Avengers. Still, when you talk core females of this team The Wasp is a founding, only female at the time, member and The Scarlet Witch has been like the Vision in terms of Avengers Membership. These two are who you think of when as a fan you hear the name Avengers. It is strange to me that only Black Widow is in the story they will make. She will probably be a SHIELD liaison at that.

It's just so odd, the Wasp and the Scarlet Witch both seem like far more of a defining Avengers member than Black Widow…

Joss still can't be bitter about Wonderwoman, can he? There are some great females for him to choose from, like Scarlet Witch!

Start the chant right now: We want Wanda! We want Wanda! We want Wanda!
