How Many Bothans Died to Bring Us These Star Wars Rogue One Images? OMG IS THAT A BOTHAN?
Some new images and info have surfaced on Gareth Edward’s Star Wars film, Rogue One, and OMFG IS THAT A BOTHAN??!!
A German fan site Jedi Library was the first to discover the images in a book catalog called Edelweiss which also yield a great deal of information about Rogue One. All of it comes from a preview of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story: The Official Visual Guide Story, a book which won’t be out until early next year. The film itself debuts December 16, 2016. Vague spoilers ahead if you care…
My pal Donna Dickens at HitFix pulled some of the text from these difficult to read images. A lot of it is placeholder text. Here are the Rebels:
Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones): As a highly skilled soldier and warrior, Jyn, along with her cohorts in the rogue band of resistance fighters, is prepared to steal the Death Star plans and bring new hope to the galaxy. United in this daring mission, Jyn and the other heroes in the Rebel Alliance will have to enter battle against the evil forces of the Empire.
Cassian Andor (Diego Luna): As a Rebel Alliance officer, Captain Cassian Andor, along with his cohorts in the rogue band of resistance fighters, is prepared to steal the Death Star plans and bring new hope to the galaxy. United in this daring mission, Cassian and the other heroes in the Rebel Alliance will have to battle the Galactic Empire.
Baze (Jiang Wen): As a freelance assassin, Baze, along with his cohorts in the rogue band of resistance fighters, is prepared to steal the Death Star plans and bring new hope to the galaxy. United in this daring mission, Baze and the other heroes in the Rebel Alliance will have to enter battle against the evil forces of the Galactic Empire.
K-250 (Alan Tudyk): As an enforcer droid, k-250, along with his cohorts in the rogue band of resistance fighters, is prepared to steal the Death Star plans and bring new hope to the galaxy. United in this daring mission, K-250 and the other heroes in the Rebel Alliance will have to enter battle against the evil forces of the Galactic Empire.

Bistan: A fierce warrior, Bistan, along with his cohorts in the rogue band of resistance fighters, is prepared to steal the Death Star plans and bring new hope to the galaxy. United in this daring mission, Bistan and the other heroes in the Rebel Alliance will have to enter battle against the evil forces of the Galactic Empire.
And the Empire:
Director Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn): As the Director of the Imperial Military, Krennic is prepared to protect and preserve the evil Galactic Empire. His means of defense will be needed more than ever when a rogue band of resistance fighters comes together for a daring mission that will see them attempt to steal plans for the Death Star, the Emperor’s ultimate weapon. The moon-sized space station has the ability to destroy an entire planet, making it the most imposing technological terror ever conceived and a serious threat to the galaxy as a whole. The Galactic Empire ruled for years thorough fear, intimidation, and tyranny. With a mighty military force including the likes of the elite Empire soldiers known as stormtroopers, advanced technology like the probe droids, and the planet-destroying Death Star. Emperor Palpatine’s evil regime seems unstoppable and permanent. This was reinforced by Darth Vader, who led the Empire’s eradication of the Jedi Order. The Sith Lord remained in service of the Emperor — the evil Darth Sidious — for decades, enforcing his Master’s will and seeking to crush the fledging Rebel Alliance. But some brave rebels dared to strike back…
Death Troopers: As elite empire soldiers with the sole purpose of thwarting enemy Rebel Alliance forces, stormtroopers are prepared to protect and preserve the evil Galactic Empire. Their means of defense will be needed more than ever when a rogue band of resistance fighters unites for a daring mission that will see them attempt to steal plans for the Death Star, the most destructive weapon ever conceived and an enormouss threat to the entire galaxy. “Many Bothans died to bring us this information,” says Mon Mothma in Return of the Jedi. But amazingly, considering the famous nature of the line, the Bothans as a species have not been explored much in Star Wars canon (although they have in Legends and apparently appear in [Editor’s Note: affiliate link] Claudia Gray’s new novel Bloodline). Is that about to change? Well, we still don’t know but many fans, myself included, are taking it upon ourselves to assume this adorable guy is a Bothan. That would make him Bithan the Bothan. Let’s hope he makes it through the movie.

I dunno, looks like a Sontaran wearing a toupee to me…
Ha!
Huh, I made a joke about Bothans when this movie first hit, and all I heard were about how the Bothans were the ones who got the codes in Jedi, not the DS plans. Shows what they know.
I like to think Bothans are just really helpful members of Galactic society. Also, it could very well just be some other adorable alien race.
I like how they look like wee furry versions of the Sontarans from Doctor Who, or if you want to go obscure, the Haluter from Perry Rhodan
If we’re being technical, many Botans died getting the information about the second Death Star. This is actually the first Death Star, so he’s got good odds to make it through the movie, he’ll just be at risk in Rogue Two.
Or maybe Bothans are just cursed to die in all excursions. EVER THINK OF THAT? Either way, his days are numbered.
I saw a suggestion a while back that there should be a whole bunch of Bothans in this movie who all make it through just to subvert expectations. Then when the same mission comes up for Death Star II they’re all over confident, like, “Well it worked so well last time, I don’t think we need reinforcements. We got this!”
It’s going to be so tragic either way.
Yeah, if this guy dies I can already feel it hurting.
Or what if it’s just that one Bothan and he survives the first mission, dies in the second, but his name is Many (and perhaps Bothan culture does not use surnames, so around other aliens they just share/default to the same surname, “Bothans.”).
We’ve never seen the species because it’s actually just a regular human guy named Many Bothans.
That was the joke in the old EU comedy comic Tag and Blink are Dead: https://40.media.tumblr.com/1ce032ce1453166cf6c24ff6e0e8bd1d/tumblr_o0iq7tpd3P1qzkmw2o1_1280.jpg
Well I didn’t know this joke had been done already.
The Tag and Blink comics are hilariously awesome. I highly recommend looking them up.
Does he get capped in the next panel by a sniper?
Shhhh! Spoilers! ;) I don’t think it was the next panel, but he definitely died in that comic.
