Thundercats? Oh!

Snnnnarf! The ThunderCats are making a comeback!

People have been trying for years to get Hollywood to make a live-action ThunderCats movie, even going so far as to create an impressive fan-made trailer showing how great it could be. Well now they’ve answered, in their own way. MTV Splash Page announced Warner Bros. Animation is producing a brand new ThunderCats animated television show for the Cartoon Network set to premiere in 2011.

Calling it “a sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes,” the studio offered some hints about what the new “Thundercats” series will involve, including “the grand origin story of Prince Lion-O’s ascension to the throne – and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost.”

Expect the new ThunderCats to have an entirely different look than the original because Warner Bros. is pairing with Studio4°C, a Japanese animation studio known for The Animatrix and Gotham Knights.

Sam Register, one of three executive producers on the project, told The Hollywood Reporter, “In addition to being Warner Bros. Animation’s first anime series, ThunderCats marks our most ambitious foray yet into fantasy. The realism and dynamic visual style we’ve achieved are sure to thrill viewers, and the cool weapons, vehicles and technology should help the show appeal to a diverse audience.”
Personally, I think it’s a much better idea than attempting a live-action film which could just come out completely bizarre and wrong. ThunderCats was one of my top animated series from the 80s and although I’m not a big anime fan, I’m really looking forward to what they do with it.
I sense a Cheetara cosplay in my future.

For some reason I keep seeing it as a cross between the original Thundercats and Animaniacs.

The original beat out He-Man and She-Ra and such as far as that goes… and even tried to 'teach a lesson' each time… even if they did have to fight that dork Mum-Ra everytime.

  2. I'm up for it. I dug the original and if they can make it as good as the He-Man series that came out a couple of years ago then I'll be happy.

  3. I actually just started rewatching the original Thundercats and I was quite surprised by how well it had stood up. I mean, looking at it as an adult there is definitely a slight cheesiness to it but they actually had some good story arcs and character development in the show. I might be willing to check out the new show but for now I am extremely happy just rewatching the old series.

    Thundercats, HO!!!!!!

Gotta agree here. After seeing how disappointing 80s cartoons/toy tie-ins make as live action movies, better to stick the animation route.

Thundercats was my gold standard of 80s cartoons so any updates need to be done right.

    yummm, Cheetara….

seriously, I think this ia solid move and I agree, a live-action movie has all the potential to be a disaster.
