Here’s the 10 Cloverfield Lane Trailer Everyone Is Talking About
Good morning! J.J. Abrams may have dropped a trailer for a Cloverfield sequel late last night called 10 Cloverfield Lane. Or did he?
Late last night Twitter started to chatter, as Twitter does, about a mysterious trailer in front of the new Michael Bay film. /Film quickly got to work compiling all they knew. The film was indeed a Bad Robot project previously titled The Cellar and Valencia and it was confirmed the footage in the trailer matched with preview screenings of that project some people had viewed. /Film writes, “The film, which shot in New Orleans in late 2014, has been editing deep inside the mystery box of Bad Robot Productions, which had an extra shell of security due to a little film called Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
But is it directly related to the 2008 Abrams-produced, Matt Reeves-directed found footage film? (Fun Trivia: Cloverfield was one of the first things I ever wrote about on this site!) Abrams gave the following statement:
The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.
So, no. We’re still not really sure. It could take place in the same universe as the first film but not be a direct sequel (it also is giving off some serious Lost hatch vibes). Or, as some have theorized, it could be the start of an anthology series from Bad Robot. If it’s the latter I think a lot of people will be disappointed. Cloverfield was a cool surprise for a lot of movie lovers when the trailer was first released in 2007 (before another Bay film) and was a really fun monster flick. The surprise aspect of this trailer being revealed is still a plus though.
What we do know for sure about the film is this: 10 Cloverfield Lane is directed by Dan Trachtenberg, written by Josh Campbell, Matt Steucken, and Damien Chazelle and stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher Jr.
Otherwise, it drops March 11th so we don’t have long to wait.
Very intrigued by this…
I am looking forward to this so much! It has me curious. From what I gather from the trailer is that this Dad – John Goodman – and his family have been living in a bunker since the attack of the first Cloverfeild in 2008. What draws my attention and sparks some questions is that around :49 seconds in you see Mary Elizabeth Winstead holding an iPhone – and what appears to be a 4 or 4s iPhone. How? Why? AHHHHHH – I will be seeing this most certainly. ;-)
I think one of the things I saw said her character is actually separate from them, that they say they found her after she got into an accident or something? But either way the phone thing is obviously * something*
Cloverfield suffered from its own hype machine, I think, and didn’t get nearly as much love and appreciation as it deserved. If you’re into picking apart minutiae and complicated marketing ploys, it was a real trip. I remember following character MySpace accounts, a tie-in vlog, all sorts of really unnecessarily, convoluted, wonderful viral clues. Alas, the movie was…just a really great giant monster movie that did, I think, a better job than any movie since of showing what a science fiction or fantasy cataclysm is like from the perspective of a normal bum. As for the sequel, I can’t watch the trailer yet, but since Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Goodman are in it, I’ll preemptively say, take all my money.
Er. Edited, because I said Chipotle, not Cloverfield…
mmm chipotle…
The weight-loss craze that’s sweeping the nation.
I didn’t see the pre-edit, but that is probably the best typo I’ve ever come across.
I fixed it pretty quick.
