San Diego Comic-Con 2017 Open Thread!

There’s set to be tons of announcements coming out of Comic-Con International in San Diego this weekend. I may not be able to keep up so feel free to drop info here and discuss with fellow fans!

Above is me in my Ravager cosplay from SDCC 2010! Very sad to be missing seeing pals out there but not missing the crowds and stress. There’s already been a few announcements made prior to the show kicking off. In no particular order…

I’ll do my best to come here and update over the next few days but I have some other work on my plate so keep an eye on Twitter for the latest! Speaking of other work, Skelton Crew has a contest for their SDCC items running until Saturday afternoon!

If you’re at the convention, I wish you well. If not, chatter away and share your favorite breaking news, cosplay, and more below. Oh! And consider this your new “Speak, Nerd, and Enter!” too since that’s about to roll off the front page and it seems silly to put up another open thread.

[UPDATE]

New Inhumans trailer…

Pacific Rim: Uprising teaser…

Young Justice news!

Syfy’s Krypton

Just saw via THR that Warner Bros’ Shazam and Black Adam films are still twi different projects and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson won’t be in Shazam. A reminder that Shazam still doesn’t have a lead for Billy Batson/Shazam until they’re announcing that this weekend…

THR also reports on some other DC film news:

Warners’ film studio chief Toby Emmerich tells The Hollywood Reporter, “Ben is our Batman. We love him as Batman. We want to keep him in the cowl as long as we can.” And Matt Reeves, who will direct the studio’s still-undated (and unwritten) The Batman, has said that he means to keep Affleck in the role. But a source with knowledge of the situation says that the studio is working on plans to usher out Affleck’s Batman — gracefully, addressing the change in some shape or form in one of the upcoming DC films.

A bunch of my pals were on the “Be Your Own Superhero: Intersectional Feminism in Comics” panel on Thursday and Penguin Random House posted it online.

Vikings!

Geoff Johns just posted a Justice League poster in advance of WB’s Hall H panel today!

Ready Player One trailer…

And Justice League!

Just a brief summary – the panel was mainly about Justice League and gave a bit more on Aquaman and The Flash. A bit disappointed they didn’t use the opportunity to announce the leads for Shazam, Green Lantern Corps, or Batgirl but apparently The Flash film is now Flashpoint based which means everything they’ve already built up in the universe might be altered significantly.

A new trailer for CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Discovery.

Deadline reports Jeremy Whitley and Emily Martin’s Princeless comic is getting made into a movie from Sony Pictures. They add, “Stefani Robinson, a writer on Atlanta, Man Seeking Woman and FX/Marvel’s animated Deadpool, has been set to write the script.”

Some new actors headed to Supergirl next season:

Adrian Pasdar (Heroes, Colony, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) will play the charismatic capitalist Morgan Edge, a ruthless real estate developer who will stop at nothing to get what he wants (and what he feels he deserves). The DC villain’s big plans for National City instantly put him at odds with Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath).

Carl Lumbly (Alias, Southland, The Cure for Wellness) embodies the classic DC character M’yrnn J’onzz, the father of J’onn J’onnz, the Martian Manhunter (David Harewood). A pacifist religious leader on Mars, M’yrn pushes his son in unexpected ways. Actor Lumbly is no stranger to the J’onzz family, as he’s voiced the Martian Manhunter on the Justice League animated series.

Yael Grobglas (Jane the Virgin, Reign) portrays DC character Psi, a psychic villain who uses people’s own minds against them. Psi’s agenda puts her on Supergirl’s radar, and their meeting will affect the Girl of Steel in surprising ways. Emma Tremblay (Elysium, The Judge, The Giver, Wayward Pines) plays Ruby, a smart, independently minded National City kid who’s fascinated by Supergirl and ends up in jeopardy because of it.

Lost star Michael Emerson will join the show this year in a yet-to-be-disclosed role.

And from Marvel Entertainment’s big panel…

Michelle Pfeiffer has been cast as Janet Van Dyne in Ant-Man and The Wasp! Hannah John-Kamen is playing the villain Ghost, Laurence Fishburne is Bill Foster, Randall Park as Jimmy Woo, and Walton Goggins as Sonny Burch.

Captain Marvel will take place in the 90s (???) and also star Nick Fury with both of his eyes. They’ll be fighting Skrulls.

Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster is the brother of Benicio del Toro’s Collector.

New Thor: Ragnarok trailer!

Black Panther footage was shown but will not be available online at this time. But a new poster!

And finally, Avengers: Infinity War brought them home…they apparently showed the same footage that premiered at D23. Here’s a small summary of the Marvel panel from Inside the Magic.

And Sunday brings us the Doctor Who Christmas special trailer!

They also showed a nice Peter Capaldi tribute.

From the BBC:

Peter Capaldi’s final episode of Doctor Who this Christmas will feature Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts and be called Twice Upon a Time, it was revealed this evening (23 July) during a cast panel at San Diego Comic Con. Viewers will have to wait until Christmas to discover exactly how Bill, who will appear throughout the episode, makes her return.

It was also revealed that the special will co-star Mark Gatiss in a guest role – as a World War One soldier, known so far only as ‘The Captain’.

As previously revealed in the closing moments of the 2017 series finale, the special will feature Peter Capaldi’s current Doctor teaming up with the First Doctor, played by David Bradley.

Here’s the writers for Supergirl talking about why they replaced James with Mon-El, and yes, it’s as bad as you think it is.

    • VindicaSean says:

Well unless they outright say, “Because Melissa’s dating the human alphabet block playing Mon-El,” I’d have to say they’re lying.

      • That Which Dreams says:

Was she dating him at the beginning of the season when they decided to break up Kara and James?

        • VindicaSean says:

I’m not quite *that* up on my CW celeb gossip, but I know she’s been dating the guy for a time, and she only divorced her husband earlier last year, so…maybe?

Something I was made aware of: all of the elf lords from Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth are villains in the MCU.

This is everything. I want to see this movie so bad.

  10. Zefram Mann says:

That Doctor Who Christmas special trailer– I am very very intrigued.

I’m frankly amazed that it took them this long to have someone else play one of the previous incarnations who’s actor is no longer among the living, but am very wary over how well they do it, and some fans will no-doubt consider it sacrilege.

That being said, a nostalgic part of me would very much like to see the first three incarnations in action again in future stories, but only if it was done well enough to feel, if not seamless, then at least– worthy.

  11. That Which Dreams says:

Watching what’s going on with Supergirl, and wow. Just wow. That’s bad.

    • VindicaSean says:

      …what happened?

      • That Which Dreams says:

        Just before the panel:
        – Jeremy Jordon did a musical recap of season two in which he A) didn’t mention Alex’s journey at all, and B) mocked the Supercorp shippers specifically and LGBT viewers in general.
        – Melissa Benoist said that Jeremy was brave for doing that.
        – Katie McGrath tried to moderate things back to a “People can ship who they want to ship” stance, but Chris Wood talked over her.
        At the panel:
        – Chris Wood said that Karamel bicker like an old married couple.
        – He then said that if you want to have a fun time come visit Daxam, because oppression, misogyny, and slavery are fun for everyone.
        – The showrunners stated that Mon-El is coming back, and that “He’s not going anywhere.”
        – Kara is going dark because while she remained a beacon of hope despite everything that’s happened to her, losing Mon-El was like losing her whole world (despite that fact that she actually has lost her whole world)
        – Maggie Sawyer is leaving the show after the first few episodes, but her and Alex will continue to have a long distance relationship. This way the show can have it’s token gay without actually having to have her do gay stuff.

  12. VindicaSean says:

Can we talk about Cate Blanchett in that new THOR trailer?
Can we talk about HULK in that new THOR trailer?

I’m swooning over a fictional damn goddess of death. And over Hulk fighting the Wolf that eats the sun at the end of all things. It’s a very confusing time for me.

  13. doc says:

Oh man, I love that Alex Ross inspired Justice League poster.

    When I don’t laugh at Cyborg’s design, it’s a sign of a solid poster!

  14. And and and! Alan More and Kevin O’Neil are back with the final League book!

Am I the only one still reading?

WELL, I’LL DO MY BEST ENGLISH BROS. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/e084a26c6df7f0c2604452ba0faad14d87c3829941f198273187a3d5a6eb0f1d.gif

  15. VindicaSean says:

Not Con related, but Valerian sucked, aside from a really fun first act. A new Fifth Element, it is decidedly not (no matter how much they tried to make Ethan Hawke into Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg in 5mins of screen time, he ain’t no Gary Oldman).

    • Shame. I suspected as much, with the leads being who they are, but…shame.

      • VindicaSean says:

They have the screen presence of alphabet blocks. They drag the movie down terribly. DeHaan barely emotes, he just raises his voice.

        • Whenever I hear about how visually stunning a movie is…Avatar, for example…or Interstellar…I always assume the plot or acting is fluff. I’m rarely wrong. This makes me sad.

Sad is a bit of an exaggeration, but I would like to be wrong occasionally.

How about a thread for the one thing you want most out of SDCC?

  18. New Wolf Among Us! I hadn’t heard that. I can’t wait!
